The USA threatens to disconnect Starlink: Ukraine's CPD responds to the threat

American negotiators have raised the issue of potentially cutting Ukraine's access to the vital satellite internet system Starlink, owned by Elon Musk. Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Counteracting Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine, commented on the situation.

This was reported by Reuters, citing three sources familiar with the matter.

The question of Ukraine's continued access to SpaceX's Starlink system was brought up during negotiations between U.S. and Ukrainian officials after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected an initial proposal from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the sources said.

Starlink provides crucial internet connectivity for war-torn Ukraine and its military.

This issue was raised again on Thursday during meetings between Keith Kellogg, U.S. Special Envoy for Ukraine, and Zelensky, one of the sources informed about the negotiations stated.

During the meeting, Ukraine was informed that it would face an imminent service shutdown if it did not reach an agreement on critical minerals, said a source who requested anonymity to discuss the closed negotiations.

“Ukraine relies on Starlink. They consider it their North Star... Losing Starlink ... would be a tremendous blow,” the source stated.

On Saturday, February 22, Andriy Kovalenko commented on this information on his Telegram page:

“Due to the news about Starlink, one should definitely not say ‘all is lost.’ Firstly – they are not disconnecting. Secondly – there are alternative solutions that are operational on the front lines,” he wrote.
