“We’ll give Trump a trump card”: Yatsenyuk suggested setting a date for elections in Ukraine

On Friday, February 21, a special Security Forum took place in Kyiv, marking the third anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion. During the event, Arseniy Yatsenyuk proposed a solution to the issue of conducting elections in Ukraine.

According to him, the Verkhovna Rada should adopt a resolution for presidential elections to be held six months after the signing of a peace agreement. The politician assured attendees that such an initiative would help address critics and provide a "trump card" for Trump in negotiations.

“The best way to undermine those who oppose Ukraine is to adopt a resolution in the Ukrainian parliament for presidential elections to take place six months after the signing of a comprehensive peace agreement,” Yatsenyuk explained.

He reminded that, under Ukrainian law, only the Verkhovna Rada can set the date for presidential elections. The parliament has the right to express the position of the Ukrainian people on this matter. In Yatsenyuk's view, this decision will clearly define when and how elections will be conducted, help avoid pressure from foreign partners, and provide an advantage in relations with Donald Trump.

“It’s simple: Ukraine holds elections six months after the war ends. Period… This way, you give Trump a trump card and take away the arguments of those who want to destabilize the situation in Ukraine,” he stated.
