Kellogg and the Election Demand

I have repeatedly stated that during the first stage of negotiations, the Russians will attempt to derail the process using the Ukrainians. The demand for elections is, de facto, a formal pretext for postponing real negotiations.

For now, we must understand three things:

  1. It seems that we will be forced to hold elections as soon as possible. The ideal option from Washington's perspective is a pause in the war, followed by elections, and then negotiations — this scenario exists, although it currently appears very unclear. However, it seems the U.S. does not rule out a Plan B, where elections occur during the war.
  2. It appears that the U.S. has settled on two main starting requirements for negotiations — non-NATO membership and elections.
  3. The reasons for the decision regarding elections are as follows:
  • The U.S. has realized that it will not be possible to conduct quick negotiations without elections, which are the primary demand of the Russians. Here, Putin has trapped himself to some extent, as he explicitly stated this without imposing additional demands. It seems that Trump has accepted this game;
  • The U.S. believes that any negotiation agreements should be signed and implemented by a newly elected leadership.

Now about us:

  1. Elections are becoming almost inevitable, with all the ensuing consequences for internal destabilization and issues with the rules of the game. I'll say something idealistic: we need a government of national unity as a result of the elections. But no political force wants this. Ultimately, no one wants to discuss negotiation positions. Everyone will speak in terms of betrayal.
  2. Our main challenge is stabilizing the front lines. This is the alpha and omega of everything.
