A couple who met at a funeral home express their hopes of breaking the "taboo" surrounding discussions about funeral services, claiming that "it's quite a nice way to get to know someone." This is reported by the Daily Star.
Beth Gilkison from Paisley met her partner Jordan Steel in 2020 after she began working as a member of the funeral service team. The average day for the 23-year-old funeral home worker now includes parking, polishing, preparing, and driving the hearse or family limousine for funerals, as well as supporting individuals who have just lost a loved one by meeting and caring for them.
25-year-old Jordan proposed to Beth in October 2024 — and now the couple is planning to tie the knot in August 2026.
"We worked together for several years before we started dating. We built a very, very good friendship and understanding. We were like kids in the branch, the youngest ones, so it was inevitable that we would eventually be together," Beth shared.
Despite both partners working at the same funeral home, they strive to keep their work separate from their personal lives, and if they have children in the future, Beth believes their experience in the funeral industry will help them speak openly about grief and death, making these topics less "taboo."
"It's quite a nice way to get to know someone; it wasn't a deliberate invitation for a date where you have to try hard to make it work — we were good friends who eventually fell in love," Beth explained.
She clarified that she and Jordan keep their work and home life completely separate.
According to Beth, many of her friends and family were "a bit shocked" by her career changes; however, over time, they all agreed that Beth has immersed herself in a passion that she truly enjoys.
Beth hopes that their experiences in the funeral business will eventually help them speak openly about death and grief with their future children.
"It shouldn't be a taboo subject. We want people to be more open and able to discuss such matters," the young woman emphasized.
Beth stated that she sees herself in the funeral sector for the rest of her career.
"Being part of something so amazing has definitely changed my perspective on life and death," Beth highlighted.
Recall that a woman woke up at her own funeral and shared what happens after death.
