A recent study by scientists has found a correlation between the habit of consuming coffee at specific times and overall health. Researchers discovered that the timing of coffee consumption is crucial, with certain hours significantly enhancing its benefits compared to drinking it throughout the day, as reported by the European Society of Cardiology.

The study, published in the European Heart Journal and led by Dr. Lu Qi from Tulane University, examined how the timing of coffee intake affects cardiovascular health and mortality. Analyzing data from 40,725 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), the researchers noted that individuals who primarily consumed coffee in the morning had a significantly lower risk of cardiovascular diseases and all-cause mortality compared to those who drank coffee throughout the day or abstained from it entirely.

The research categorized participants into those who drank coffee in the morning, those who consumed it throughout the day, and those who did not drink coffee, revealing that morning coffee drinkers experienced a 16% reduction in all-cause mortality risk and a 31% reduction in the risk of death from cardiovascular diseases. These benefits were particularly evident among moderate and frequent morning coffee consumers, while those who enjoyed only one cup or less saw only a minimal reduction in risk.

Conversely, individuals who drank coffee throughout the day did not show a statistically significant decrease in these risks compared to non-coffee drinkers. Dr. Qi emphasized the novelty of the findings, stating, "This is the first study to examine the timing characteristics of coffee consumption and health outcomes." He suggested that morning coffee consumption aligns better with circadian rhythms, minimizing sleep disruptions and hormonal imbalances caused by caffeine intake later in the day.

Disruptions in melatonin levels and circadian rhythms, associated with inflammation and increased blood pressure, may explain the lack of positive effects for those who drink coffee during the day, according to the authors. The study's results were supported by an editorial from Professor Thomas F. Lüscher of the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals, who noted the physiological basis for the observed effects. He pointed out that morning coffee consumption coincides with the natural peak of sympathetic nervous system activity, potentially enhancing health benefits and preventing sleep disturbances typical of those who consume coffee throughout the day.

In addition to its immediate findings, this research also illustrates broader implications of coffee consumption for dietary recommendations. Timing, often overlooked in dietary guidelines, can be critical for health promotion, the authors stated. As Dr. Qi noted, future studies and clinical trials are needed to confirm these results across different populations and to explore the practical application of such strategies in healthcare.
