The Ukrainian Armed Forces have made further advances in the Kursk region, but there are also successes for Russia, according to ISW.

The Ukrainian defense forces have achieved new successes in the Russian Kursk region. This progress is confirmed by geolocation footage.

This information is reported in an analysis by the American Institute for the Study of War.

According to geolocation footage from January 5 and 6, the Ukrainian Armed Forces recently advanced in the southern part of Berdina, as well as in the center of the settlements of Russkoe Porechnoe and Novosotnitskoe (all to the northeast of Sudzhi).

At the same time, Russian forces attempted to leverage these attacks by the Ukrainian army to launch their own offensive in other areas of the Ukrainian salient in the Kursk region. Geolocation footage from January 5 shows that Russian troops advanced west of Malaya Loknya (to the northwest of Sudzhi).

Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense and military correspondents claimed on January 6 that Russian forces repelled a Ukrainian mechanized attack involving approximately a platoon in the area of Berdina and Novosotnitskoe. Additionally, Russian bloggers allege that several units of Russian troops cleared areas near the two aforementioned settlements. According to military correspondents, Russian forces reportedly captured Leonidovo and advanced in the northeast of Russkoe Porechnoe. ISW has not found confirmation of the latter claim, and there is no comment on the previous ones.

Analysts note that one Russian military correspondent characterized the recent attacks by Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region as intensified reconnaissance in force operations, which may serve as a diversionary maneuver for unspecified future operations.

"The intensification of Ukrainian offensive operations in the Kursk region could be the initial stages of a coordinated Ukrainian operation in the Kursk region or elsewhere in the theater of operations, although ISW is not prepared to make any specific predictions," the experts write.
