The rise in cases of the new Chinese human metapneumovirus (HMPV) has captured global attention, particularly as it evokes memories of the previous pandemic onset. The situation has recently taken on a global scale, with the first case of infection reported in Ukraine. The history of the virus dates back decades, although scientists are still unable to accurately predict how its new mutation will develop, writes BW Health Care.
Discovered in 2001 by Dutch researchers, metapneumovirus infection primarily affects the respiratory system, exhibiting symptoms similar to those of the common cold or flu. These symptoms include cough, fever, and nasal congestion, while severe complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia are observed in vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The incubation period ranges from 3 to 6 days, and the duration of the illness does not exceed 10 days.
Recent spikes in metapneumovirus infection are particularly noticeable among children under 14, leading to overcrowding in hospitals in affected areas. The increase in HMPV prevalence coincides with other respiratory infections, including influenza A, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and residual cases of COVID-19, which further strains healthcare systems in various countries. The cold winter season, which exacerbates respiratory illnesses, complicates the situation even more. As of now, 13 individuals in Ukraine have been infected with the metapneumovirus, as reported by infectious disease specialist and advisor to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Olga Golubovska.
The virus spreads through respiratory pathways, highlighting the importance of taking preventive measures that people have become accustomed to during the previous pandemic. Dr. Jayalakshmi T.K., Senior Consultant in Pulmonology at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, discussed important precautionary measures such as regular hand washing, avoiding touching the face, and disinfecting frequently used surfaces. Although there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment for the virus, these simple hygiene practices remain extremely important.
Doctors also recommend social distancing and avoiding contact with symptomatic individuals. The interconnected nature of global health and disease transmission necessitates heightened vigilance from governments. Dr. Jayalakshmi advises officials to closely monitor global trends to preempt any potential outbreaks.
Increasing public awareness and adhering to hygiene practices developed during the COVID-19 pandemic can serve as effective preventive measures against HMPV and similar infections, according to doctors. They also emphasize the broader lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, such as the importance of robust healthcare system preparedness and the financial systems of states.
Global studies have shown that metapneumovirus infection is a leading cause of respiratory infections in children, second only to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Prior to the pandemic, HMPV accounted for 6-8% of hospitalizations for acute respiratory diseases among the pediatric population. This statistic indicates the significant and longstanding role of the virus in public health even beyond outbreaks. The recent surge of metapneumovirus in China and its emergence in Ukraine serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of infectious diseases and the necessity for collective efforts from both the state and society to prevent the deterioration of the overall situation.
