Ukraine managed to mobilize only 200,000 in 2024, - Washington Post
In 2024, Ukrainian authorities were able to mobilize just 200,000 people instead of the needed 500,000, as previously stated by former Commander-in-Chief Valeriy Zaluzhny.
This information comes from the Washington Post, citing Ukrainian and Western officials.
The publication notes that Russian troops are advancing faster than ever since the beginning of the war, leveraging their advantage in manpower. Casualties are high on both sides, but ongoing attacks supported by artillery and drones are forcing Ukrainian forces to retreat.
"The ranks of Ukrainian soldiers are becoming increasingly depleted," the newspaper writes, referencing declining morale and criticism of the mobilization efforts.
"People are being called into the army, but losses are significant, and the current pace of mobilization is insufficient," notes Taras, the deputy commander of a battalion near Pokrovsk.
Many military personnel report an increase in desertion rates and challenges for new recruits.
"When I first joined the army, it was tough, but now the situation is so much worse that I don't blame those who desert," shares 27-year-old infantryman Alexander.
Some soldiers believe that Ukraine will have to make painful concessions. "The situation is worse than at the beginning. What can we negotiate now? We can only agree to their demands," says Taras, commander of a company in the 35th brigade.
