In Ternopil, unknown individuals damaged six monuments dedicated to those who perished in World War II. The monuments, located on the Alley of Glory in the Old Park, honor the heroes of the USSR who lost their lives in battles for Ternopil. This area also features a military cemetery.
Reports of scattered metal busts and broken slabs were made to the police on Friday, February 28, around 7:30 AM. A worker from the municipal enterprise responsible for maintaining the Old Park noticed the damaged monuments. Law enforcement officers promptly arrived at the scene.
“The police established that a total of six memorial signs dedicated to those who died in World War II were damaged. Slabs around the base were broken, plaques were removed, and busts were toppled,” – reported the Ternopil police on Friday, February 28.
Currently, the authorities have registered the incident in the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations under Article 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (Hooliganism). Efforts are ongoing to identify the individual responsible for the offense. The police are also asking local residents, if you have any information regarding the incident or the individuals involved, to report it to the hotline at 102.
Additionally, the Old Park is located near the center of Ternopil. During World War II, it was completely destroyed. A military cemetery with mass and individual graves was established in its place. In 1970, a Glory Mound was constructed here, and the Alley of Glory was created with monuments and busts honoring the soldiers who died in 1944.
