Employees of the police and the Security Service of Ukraine apprehended a 43-year-old man who attempted to detonate an explosive device near a police patrol in Kyiv. The perpetrator acted on behalf of Russian intelligence services, reported the National Police and the Office of the Attorney General on Tuesday, November 26.
They shared that a woman contacted the police with a report that her boyfriend had assaulted her. During a phone call with the officers, the alleged victim indicated that out of fear of retaliation, she had locked herself in the bathroom while leaving the apartment door open. Shortly thereafter, a police unit from the domestic violence response sector arrived at the scene.
“Upon entering the apartment, the police realized that there was a 'booby trap' inside, so they quickly evacuated the area before the grenade detonated,” – stated the police, noting that none of the officers were harmed.
Operatives from the Kyiv police and employees of the Internal Security Department and the SBU detained the suspect, identified as a 43-year-old resident of Kyiv Oblast, who had previously served sentences for various criminal offenses.
As investigators established, enemy intelligence services recruited the repeat offender via Telegram. Previously, the resident of Kyiv Oblast had set fire to relay cabinets belonging to “Ukrzaliznytsia,” after which the Russians offered him a task to plant explosives in a rented apartment. In exchange, he was promised a payment of $2,000.
Under the direction of his handler, the suspect rented an apartment in Pechersk in advance, installed surveillance cameras there, and set up a homemade explosive device—a so-called booby trap with an F-1 grenade—near the entrance door. The 43-year-old man also involved an unknown woman who called the police supposedly due to domestic violence. In reality, there was no one in the apartment at that time.
The perpetrator was arrested at his home. The police noted that the man had not received any money from the Russian intelligence services for committing the terrorist act.
Earlier, the National Police reported a series of sabotage incidents involving grenades and other explosive devices in Kyiv, targeting law enforcement and military personnel. The authorities emphasized that these premeditated crimes are intended to intimidate the public and disrupt the normal functioning of law enforcement agencies.
