Seven thousand former prisoners have already joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Of these, six thousand are actively participating in combat operations. This was reported to the publication "Suspilne" by a source in the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on November 29.
It is noted that the released citizens serve exclusively in assault units composed entirely of former prisoners. The volunteers are under the supervision of the military units they are assigned to and cannot leave their deployment location without the commander's permission. The command has the authority to transfer former prisoners to other military units based on combat operations.
Inmates wishing to mobilize can join the Defense Forces following a court decision for early conditional release and after passing a military medical commission. However, there must be no more than three years remaining on their sentence.
Recall that on May 8, the Verkhovna Rada passed a draft law allowing voluntary mobilization of certain categories of prisoners. David Arakhamia, a member of the Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence, stated that the total number of prisoners who could potentially be mobilized into the Defense Forces of Ukraine is between 15,000 and 20,000 people.
In September, the deputy commander of the Third Separate Assault Brigade, Maksym Zhorin, mentioned that former prisoners are highly motivated and dedicated personnel. According to the military, the decision to allow certain categories of convicts to mobilize into the Armed Forces of Ukraine is a "quite successful solution."
