On Thursday, February 27, "Suspilne" published a video in which a soldier from the Russian 810th Naval Infantry Brigade admits to executing a Ukrainian prisoner of war. The video was provided to journalists by law enforcement officials.
According to the Russian soldier, the incident occurred on December 21, 2024, in the Kursk region. He recounted that he captured two Ukrainians, one of whom had shrapnel wounds to his leg. Allegedly, the order to execute the Ukrainian prisoner was given to him by his platoon commander.
“We captured two prisoners of war. I tied one to a tree and then returned to the second. The second soldier had a leg injury – a shrapnel wound from a drone. After that, I contacted my commander of the 2nd platoon ‘Gyurza,’ and he ordered me to shoot the soldier who had the shrapnel in his leg. I shot the soldier. I admit my guilt and am ready to face the punishment prescribed by law,” said the Russian soldier.
“Suspilne,” citing investigators, reports that during the execution, the Ukrainian prisoner was lying face down on the ground with his hands tied behind his back.
The Russian soldier who executed the Ukrainian was captured by SSO fighters a few days after committing this war crime. He will soon be informed of the charges against him. Law enforcement is also identifying the platoon commander with the call sign “Gyurza,” who, according to the Russian, ordered the execution of the captured Ukrainian soldier.
810th Separate Guards Naval Infantry Brigade of the Russian Navy is stationed in occupied Crimea. The military brigades participated in the occupation of Volnovakha and Mariupol in Donetsk region. Since October 2022, the brigade has occupied positions in Kherson region. In 2023, some elements of the brigade were present in the Zaporizhzhia direction. Since 2024, the brigade has been involved in battles in Kursk region.
Recall that on February 23, Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets reported that the Russians shot two Ukrainian prisoners of war in Kursk. It is noted that Ukraine and the UN have repeatedly received evidence that the execution of Ukrainian prisoners by the Russians is a deliberate policy of Russia. The highest number of executions was recorded in 2024.
