The dictionary of contemporary Ukrainian language and slang has named "busification" the word of the year for 2024.

In 2023, the word of the year, according to the dictionary, was "mobilization."

The online dictionary of contemporary Ukrainian language and slang, "Myslovo," has declared the word "busification" as the word of the year for 2024. This neologism refers to forced mobilization under an expedited procedure. This was announced in a statement published on the dictionary's website on Monday, January 6.

According to "Myslovo," the term "busification" has been at the center of public attention throughout the year 2024. This term highlights the issues related to mobilization in Ukraine.

Among the contenders for the "word of the year" were:

  • SZCh (self-abandonment of a unit);
  • Kursk operation;
  • fatigue (referring to war fatigue due to the ongoing conflict initiated by Russia against Ukraine);
  • negotiations;
  • MSЕК (medical and social expert commission);
  • populism;
  • Magura (a sea drone of Ukrainian production);
  • lalochezia (the use of profanity to relieve pain or stress);
  • quadribers (members of a youth subculture that mimic animals).

It is noted that the "Myslovo" project was established in 2012. Its aim is to document neologisms, slang, and other manifestations of contemporary Ukrainian language. Words and definitions are submitted by Ukrainians.

Additionally, the word of the year in 2023 was "mobilization," in 2022 it was the phrase "Russian warship, go f*ck yourself," in 2021 it was "vaccine," in 2020 it was "coronavirus," in 2019 it was "digitalization," in 2018 it was "Tomos," in 2017 it was "visa-free," in 2016 it was "corruption," in 2015 it was "blockade," in 2014 it was "cyborgs," and in 2013 it was "Euromaidan."
