Switzerland has banned the export of ammunition to Poland due to its transfer to Ukraine.

The Swiss government has prohibited the export of small-caliber ammunition to a Polish military equipment supplier due to the fact that it was transferred to Ukraine. This was reported on Friday, November 22, by the Associated Press news agency.

In November 2023, the military publication Defense One published an article stating that the Polish importer UMO delivered 645,000 armor-piercing rounds for rifles manufactured by the Swiss company SwissP Defense to Ukraine. The Swiss State Secretariat has initiated an investigation regarding this matter.

According to the investigation, the Swiss supplier and the Polish company signed an agreement stipulating that the Polish company was only permitted to resell the ammunition within Poland. However, it was discovered that the Polish company “failed to fulfill its contractual obligations to the Swiss manufacturer, and the ammunition ended up in Ukraine”.

Associated Press notes that Switzerland adheres to a policy of neutrality. The country's legislation prohibits the export of military equipment and ammunition that is owned or produced in Switzerland to countries involved in conflict. On Friday, November 23, the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs announced that exports to the Polish company would be banned, as “the risk of redirection to Ukraine is assessed as too high”.

At the same time, as the news agency pointed out, Switzerland supports Ukraine. In particular, the country backed the European Union's economic sanctions against Russia due to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Switzerland also provides humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
