In Saqqara, archaeologists have unearthed four tombs dating back to the end of the 2nd and the beginning of the 3rd dynasties, as well as ten burials from the 18th dynasty of the New Kingdom. Located 40 kilometers southwest of Cairo, Saqqara served as the primary cemetery for Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt, writes Heritage Daily.

The Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mohamed Ismail Khaled, emphasized the significance of the Japanese-Egyptian mission: it is likely that the necropolis extended much further north than previously thought, showcasing the historical potential of this site. The discovery of 18th dynasty burials also highlights Saqqara's importance during the New Kingdom era when Memphis regained its prominence after the expulsion of the Hyksos.

Among the findings are two mud-brick mastabas and two rock-cut tombs. One of the tombs, situated at the northern edge of the Saqqara plateau, features a surface structure and a burial mound reinforced with limestone blocks leading to a chamber below.

The other mastaba, located at a rocky slope, contains a central rectangular pit. Nearby, archaeologists discovered various artifacts, including an alabaster dish and a solid cylindrical vessel, likely dating from the end of the 2nd or the beginning of the 3rd dynasty.

The head of the Japanese team, Dr. Nozomu Kawai, also spoke about findings from a previously discovered Greco-Roman tomb. Researchers unearthed wooden coffins, terracotta models of burials, human remains, and artifacts depicting Isis and Aphrodite.
