The technology corporation Microsoft will discontinue the Skype application for voice and messaging. The program will be shut down after 21 years of operation, as announced on Skype's page.
“To optimize our free communication offerings, allowing us to better adapt to customer needs, we will discontinue Skype in May 2025,” the application’s website stated.
The functionality and accounts from the application will be transferred for free to the Microsoft Teams platform. Users will be able to make free calls, exchange messages, and share files.
However, the ability to make calls to domestic and international numbers will not be transferred to Microsoft Teams. According to Microsoft’s Vice President of Products, Amit Fulay, this feature was relevant when voice communication via IP was unavailable and mobile rates remained high.
The application will cease operations on May 5. Skype has been in operation for 21 years.
