Lithuania and Ukraine have reached an agreement to develop joint weapons production, allocating 20 million euros for this purpose. This was reported by the press service of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense on Saturday, March 1.
It is noted that the agreement to continue supporting Ukraine in the defense sector follows a meeting between Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv. Subsequently, senior strategic advisor to the president Oleksandr Kamyshin, Minister of Strategic Industries Herman Smetanin, and Lithuanian Minister of Defense Daivile Šakalienė reached a preliminary agreement on the production of strategic weapons in collaboration with Ukraine.
According to the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense, the agreement includes the joint production of armaments on Lithuanian territory.
“Lithuania will continue to invest in Ukraine's defense industry, purchasing from Ukraine for Ukraine. A sum of 20 million euros has already been allocated, and this amount will continue to grow. However, we aim for even closer cooperation – the development of joint Lithuanian-Ukrainian weapons production both in Lithuania and Ukraine,” Šakalienė stated.
For security reasons, the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense did not specify which types of weapons are covered by the agreement. Meetings between representatives of the countries will be held in Lithuania soon to finalize the agreement.
