Last year, in the Lithuanian city of Šiauliai, unknown individuals attempted to set fire to a shipment of military aid meant for Ukraine. Police Commissioner Arūnas Paulauskas described this as yet another hybrid attack against Lithuania, reported broadcaster LRT on Friday, February 28.
According to the police, "certain military equipment and radar stations that were supposed to be sent to Ukraine" were mobilized at the site in Šiauliai.
"And, as we understand, a group of people who had orders attempted to set it on fire… Thanks to cooperation with intelligence, these individuals have been identified. Three people have been arrested, and an international search has been issued for others," noted Paulauskas.
Arūnas Paulauskas referred to the arson attempt in Šiauliai as part of hybrid warfare.
"Indeed, we are already at war; this is hybrid warfare. Yes, it may not be so obvious, but it is still there," said the police commissioner.
The publication reminds that in November 2024, Lithuanian law enforcement detained two Spanish citizens for their alleged attempt to carry out a terrorist act in Šiauliai in September. It was reported that the Spaniards may have been recruited by Russian intelligence.
Earlier, it became known that Russia created a secret spy unit for sabotage and assassinations in Europe. The SSD department is believed to be behind numerous recent attacks, including an assassination attempt on the CEO of a German arms manufacturer and a conspiracy to place incendiary devices on planes used by the giant logistics company DHL.
