Former Manchester United forward Ruud van Nistelrooy has been appointed as the head coach of Leicester, according to the official website of the Foxes. The 48-year-old specialist has signed a contract with the ex-Premier League champions until June 2027. The Dutchman will replace Steve Cooper, who was dismissed following a 1-2 loss to Chelsea in the 12th round of the Premier League and a sequence of five matches without a victory across all competitions.
Van Nistelrooy will begin his direct responsibilities after the Saturday match of the 13th round of the English Championship against Brentford – in this game, the team will be managed by youth coach Ben Dawson.
Interestingly, prior to his invitation to Leicester, the Dutchman had been part of the coaching staff at Manchester United since July as an assistant to Erik ten Hag. After his compatriot was dismissed, he temporarily took charge of the Red Devils, achieving three victories in four matches (including two wins against Leicester – in the League Cup (5:2) and the Premier League (3:0)). He left the club when Portuguese Ruben Amorim began his role as head coach of the team.
To recall, van Nistelrooy's playing career began in 1993 with the Dutch club Den Bosch. He subsequently played for Heerenveen, PSV, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Hamburg, and Malaga. He started his coaching career as an assistant with the Netherlands national team in 2014. He then worked with various age groups at PSV, from U-17 to the first team, with which he won the Dutch Cup and Super Cup.
By the way, after 12 rounds, Leicester currently sits in 16th place in the Premier League standings, having earned 10 points.
