On Thursday, January 30, Kyiv's "Dynamo" hosted the Latvian RFS in Hamburg as part of the concluding 8th round of the group stage of the Europa League. Under the guidance of Oleksandr Shovkovskyi, the team managed to score a single decisive goal, securing their first victory in the tournament.
Europa League, 8th round
"Dynamo" (Ukraine) – RFS (Latvia) – 1:0
Goal: Pikhaliok, 76
"Dynamo" appeared sharper than their opponent at the start of the match, but they struggled to find the net. In the 21st minute, Vanat managed to open the scoring, but the goal was disallowed due to offside. Moments later, Neshcheret saved the Kyiv team by stopping a shot from Ikauņieks under the crossbar.
Shortly after, the RFS goalkeeper intervened following a shot from Kabayev. In added time, "Dynamo" missed a fantastic chance to score: Pikhaliok received a pass in the penalty area but instead of shooting, he passed to a teammate, and the ball went wide of the goal.
After the break, the Kyiv side nearly conceded, forgetting about Kwadjo at the far post—luckily, he failed to hit the target from close range. Then, at the midpoint of the second half, Pikhaliok received the ball near the penalty spot and finally broke the deadlock against the Latvians.
This goal was the only one in the match. "Dynamo" secured their first victory in this year's Europa League and climbed two spots, finishing in 34th place in the tournament table (4 points). RFS, with 5 points, ended up in 32nd place.
