The royal coat of arms of Denmark has highlighted the symbols of Greenland and the Faroe Islands following the renewed interest of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in purchasing Greenland. This was reported by The Guardian on Monday, January 6.

It is known that the royal coats of arms of Denmark have featured three crowns for 500 years, symbolizing the Kalmar Union between Denmark, Norway, and Sweden from 1397 to 1523. Now, the crowns have been replaced with more prominent images of a polar bear and a ram, representing Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

The royal coat of arms of Denmark has changed three times since 1819: in 1903, 1948, and 1972. This change is another step towards modernizing the symbols of the Kingdom of Denmark, taking into account contemporary political and cultural realities,” the publication adds.

The Danish royal house states that the updated coat of arms strengthens the authority of the commonwealth. The decision was made after Trump once again expressed his desire to buy Greenland. He first made this statement during his initial presidential term, at which point Denmark publicly refused him even before negotiations began.

In December 2024, Trump stated that control over the island is an absolute necessity for the U.S. According to him, the United States has security issues and commercial interests that would be best addressed by placing the Panama Canal and Greenland under control.

Recall that earlier, the Associated Press reported that in the early days of his presidency, Donald Trump would initiate the deportation of illegal migrants and dismiss thousands of civil servants, as well as attempt to bring Ukraine and Russia to the negotiating table.
