This January has been marked by abnormal warmth and a lack of snow. The head of the meteorological forecasting department at the Ukrhydrometcenter, Natalia Golenya, shared in a comment to TSN whether we can expect real winter weather in February.
The expert explained that there has not been a true winter in Ukraine so far — the average daily temperature has mostly been above zero.
"Such winters have become characteristic in Ukraine; we have not recorded temperature lows over the last 20 years, with slightly colder conditions in the Carpathians and the northern regions of Sumy and Chernihiv," — she noted.
According to the Ukrhydrometcenter's forecast, February will start with relatively low temperatures as arctic air moves in from the northwest and north. However, it will mostly be cloudy, and these frosts will not be significantly felt by Ukrainians.
From February 1 to 6, nighttime temperatures will drop to between -5 and -8 degrees. During the day, thermometers will register temperatures from zero to -5 degrees.
"This means that the three days from February 4 to 6 will be considered 'winter' days this year. After that, temperature fluctuations are possible, but overall, forecasts for February indicate positive temperature anomalies. In the second half of the month, anticyclonic or sunny weather will prevail, so significant precipitation is not expected; the month may be dry," — Golenya predicted.
The meteorologist suggested that it may snow in the north and east. In other regions, there is no need to expect snowy weather — if it does snow, it will quickly melt away.
The average monthly temperature in February is expected to range from -3 to +2 degrees. This means the temperature will be roughly similar to that of January.
At the same time, the total monthly precipitation is likely to be between 25-65 mm, which is below the norm. In January, the southern regions received 32 mm, while the western and northern regions received 79 mm. Thus, the last month of winter will be even drier.
Recall that meteorologists have predicted snow on February 5 and 6. The Ukrhydrometcenter anticipates snowfall across the country.
