Scientists believe they have discovered a subtle sign that your dog is trying to communicate with you, as reported by DailyMail.
In an experiment, researchers analyzed the reactions of 54 pet dogs to videos featuring other dogs that were licking their noses, staring intently at the camera, or remaining still.
The results indicated that dogs most frequently reacted when their counterparts in the video began to blink. The researchers suggested that this behavior was a form of imitation, serving as a kind of signal. The team now believes that blinking plays a crucial role in canine communication.
"In dogs, blinking is considered a calming behavior used to express non-aggressive intentions towards peers. In dogs, blinking is viewed as a calming behavior, utilized to convey non-aggressive intentions towards fellow canines," states the team from the University of Parma.
Additionally, the researchers note that mutual blinking among dogs helps to establish social bonds.
During the experiment, the scientists did not observe a similar reaction from the dogs to nose licking. This indicates that it "does not serve the same function as blinking."
Another study revealed that dogs can identify six different emotions in their four-legged friends.
When 105 individuals were shown photos of three different dog breeds, they accurately identified feelings of happiness, sadness, curiosity, fear, disgust, and anger in the animals with a precision that far exceeded chance.
"Some people believe it's impossible to understand what a dog is thinking just by looking at its face, as it is not as expressive as ours, while others think they can gaze into their pet's eyes and know what's on its mind," says the lead author of the study from the University of Florida and Harvard University, Harris Friedman.
It’s worth noting that dogs first communicated with humans by asking for food and water, but they did not express love. In a new experiment, scientists have shown for the first time that dogs can form combinations of two words using a sound panel for communication.
