In Chernivtsi, authorities recovered the body of a drowning victim from the city pond.

Another drowning victim has been discovered in the Prut River within the Mamaivska community.

On the morning of January 21 in Chernivtsi, the body of a drowning victim was retrieved from the city pond. Residents of nearby houses reported to the rescue service that a man had fallen through the ice the day before. Another drowning victim was discovered in the Prut River in the Mamaivtsi community. According to eyewitnesses, he attempted to cross the waterway but lost his footing and drowned.

The unfortunate incident in Chernivtsi occurred on the evening of January 20 at the city pond on Chornovola Street. Locals noticed a man had fallen through the ice and called for rescuers.

“Specialists from the rescue service responded to the scene. The emergency responders conducted a surface inspection of the water body and found upper clothing and footwear in the pond. The missing person had not been located. Due to the onset of darkness, the search operations were temporarily halted,”reported the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Bukovina on Tuesday, January 21.

On the morning of January 21, the search resumed. Around 9:40 AM, a diver discovered the body of a man, approximately 40 years old, in the lake. He was brought to shore and handed over to police for identification and investigation of the circumstances. A total of 10 personnel, 2 units of equipment, a watercraft, and 2 drones were involved in the search efforts. Additionally, divers from the Chernivtsi rescue service were active in the water.

A day prior to this unfortunate incident, on January 20, another person drowned in the Prut River. The accident occurred in the village of Hlynysia, part of the Mamaivtsi territorial community. Witnesses called the rescue service to report that a 27-year-old man had gone to the river and did not return. He had mentioned his intention to cross the Prut.

“Law enforcement, along with 41 rescuers and 14 units of equipment, including 5 watercraft and 3 drones, were dispatched for the search. Thanks to prompt response and timely mobilization of forces and resources, the man's body was located and retrieved in the shortest possible time, unfortunately without signs of life,”reported the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Bukovina.

It should be noted that since the beginning of the year, two drowning incidents have already been registered in Chernivtsi Oblast.
