Massive wildfires in the east and west of Los Angeles (USA), now entering their third day, have claimed at least 10 lives and destroyed nearly 10,000 buildings. This was reported by Reuters on Friday, January 10.

The fires in the upscale Pacific Palisades area, located between Santa Monica and Malibu, and the fire in Eaton near Pasadena are being described as the most destructive in Los Angeles history. The flames have completely ravaged over 13 hectares of land.

According to the latest data from the Los Angeles County coroner's office, the fires have taken the lives of 10 individuals. Sheriff Robert Luna has warned that the death toll may rise.

The American weather company AccuWeather has estimated the damages and economic losses from the fires in Los Angeles to be between $135 billion and $150 billion.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass assured that the city is actively preparing for recovery following the extensive fires. Her efforts in disaster response have already faced criticism from elected President Donald Trump and other Republicans.

President Joe Biden promised that the federal government would cover 100% of the costs for disaster recovery within the next 180 days. This includes the removal of debris and hazardous materials, the construction of temporary shelters, and providing payments for first responders.

In total, five wildfires have erupted in Los Angeles County, with the largest fire in Pacific Palisades only being 6% contained, while the fire in Eaton is at 0%. Aircraft are circling above these areas, releasing fire retardant mixtures and water onto the burning hills.

On January 9, a fire broke out near Calabasas, one of the wealthiest cities in the USA, home to celebrities and luxury communities. The so-called Kenneth Fire spread to 388 acres in just a few hours.

Later, the winds calmed, allowing for the necessary air support for ground crews. However, officials stated that the winds picked up again overnight, and a red flag warning is expected by the evening of January 10.

On January 9, it was reported that due to the fire approaching Hollywood Boulevard and the Walk of Fame, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the postponement of the announcement of nominees for this year's Critics Choice Awards, originally scheduled for January 11-12. Currently, emergency services are managing the fire in the Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles, which ignited on the evening of January 8.
