In Dnipro, lawmakers have restored the former names of several streets.

Previously, the mayor of Dnipro, Boris Filatov, opposed the renaming of certain toponyms as part of the decommunization process.
В Днепре депутаты вернули прежние названия некоторым улицам.

Members of the Dnipro City Council voted to restore the former names of 20 streets and alleys that were renamed during the decommunization process in July 2024. This was reported in a press release from the city council dated December 18, which was received by journalists from "Suspilne."

City officials explained that during the renaming of the toponyms, they took into account collective appeals from Dnipro residents, the results of public hearings in district administrations, as well as letters from the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory. For instance, the Novodniprovskiy district regained its name Amur-Novodniprovskiy because the name "Amur" originates from the historical name of the area.

Additionally, the list shows that Admiral Bilynskyi Street has once again become Caspian Street, and Kyrylo Osmak Street has been renamed to the 20th Anniversary of Victory Street. During the 60th regular session, the members of the Dnipro City Council decided to restore the name of Bratsky Lane to Mykola Pymonenko.

The public organization "Dekolonizatsiya.Ukraine" published a complete list of the 20 renamed streets, alleys, squares, and boulevards in Dnipro.

Journalists from "Suspilne" report that in July 2024, 292 streets, alleys, avenues, bridges, boulevards, and parks were renamed in Dnipro and the surrounding area. Overall, since the beginning of the full-scale Russian aggression, more than 4,200 toponyms have been changed in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast for the purposes of derussification and decolonization.

Opposition to the renaming of certain toponyms came from Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov and the head of the Kryvyi Rih Defense Council Oleksandr Vilkul. They stated that the regional renaming commission did not take into account the opinions of either the city leadership or the deputies. Vilkul added that no public hearings were held on this matter in Kryvyi Rih.
