Russians are supporting certain political forces, as well as presidential candidates in Romania. This was reported on November 11 by the local publication Digi24, citing its own sources.
It is noted that Russia is attempting to interfere and influence the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections in Romania. In particular, the Kremlin is resorting to various manipulations during the electoral campaign, including supporting specific candidates. However, journalists did not specify who exactly is being referred to.
The Romanian Intelligence Service is actively monitoring the activities of Russians within the country. They are paying special attention to individuals and organizations that undermine Romania's alliance with the European Union and NATO. Additionally, Romanian intelligence agencies are examining potential influences from other countries, including China and North Korea.
Furthermore, the Romanian parliament has tasked an investigation into the possibility of foreign states conducting cyberattacks on government institutions and spreading disinformation. Law enforcement has already discovered and opened a criminal case regarding a network of bots and trolls on social media attempting to obtain illegitimate content to promote certain candidates.
Moreover, the first round of presidential elections in Romania will take place on November 24, with the second round on December 8. Parliamentary elections will occur in between.
Recall that in October, the Constitutional Court of Romania removed the far-right candidate Diana Șoșoacă from the presidential race.
