Employees of the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and border guards apprehended an inspector from the border service in the Chernivtsi region, who was assisting conscripted men in illegally leaving Ukraine. He charged 20,000 euros from each man for crossing the border.
«The suspect had information about the timing and location of border patrol movements, so he promised his clients to personally guide them across the border on foot. He gathered interested individuals at a predetermined location and transported them in his own vehicle to one of the border villages near the Romanian border», – reported the SBI on January 18.
The State Border Guard Service added that they received information regarding the potential involvement of this border guard in illegal trafficking. Operatives, together with officers from the internal and own security department, monitored his actions and caught him red-handed.
The border guard was detained while facilitating the crossing of a draft evader who was hiding in the trunk of a car under a blanket. Nearby were the funds he was supposed to pay for crossing the border.
The border guard will be notified of suspicion for the illegal transportation of individuals across the state border of Ukraine for selfish motives (Part 3 of Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The sanctions of the article provide for imprisonment for up to 9 years. The Chernivtsi Specialized Prosecutor's Office in the defense sector of the Western region is overseeing the proceedings.
