The President has appointed a general to oversee the coordination of military aid to Ukraine.

Brigadier General Hennadiy Shapovalov will be collaborating with NATO partners in Wiesbaden, Germany.

Brigadier General Hennadiy Shapovalov has been appointed to lead the Ukrainian team in the NATO mission for coordinating military assistance to Ukraine (NSATU). This was announced on Sunday, January 19, by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.

“Brigadier General Hennadiy Shapovalov will work with our partners in Wiesbaden, and his task is to coordinate security assistance to Ukraine,” the president stated.

The head of Ukraine's Ministry of Defense, Rustem Umerov, reported that he has already signed the relevant order appointing General Shapovalov. Umerov highlighted the significant combat experience of the officer.

“Over the years of service, he has progressed through all levels of a military career – from tank platoon commander to commander of the 59th separate motorized infantry brigade named after Yakov Handziuk. In 2022, he earned the rank of brigadier general,” said the minister.

It should be noted that NSATU is a NATO mission aimed at coordinating training and providing security assistance to Ukraine. The NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) mission was established in Wiesbaden, Germany, in July 2024. The mission comprises approximately 700 military personnel from NATO member states and partner countries.

What is known about Hennadiy Shapovalov

Hennadiy Shapovalov was born in Kirovohrad region in 1978. In 2000, he graduated with honors from the Tank Troops Institute at the Kharkiv State Polytechnic University, and in 2012, also with honors, from the Command and Staff Institute of the National Defense University of Ukraine. Additionally, Shapovalov is a graduate of the National University of Ostroh Academy with a degree in “International Relations, Public Communications, and Regional Studies,” and the U.S. Army War College, which trains senior Army officers.

At the end of 2017, Hennadiy Shapovalov was awarded the medal “For Military Service to Ukraine.”

From 2019 to 2021, Hennadiy Shapovalov led the 59th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade, stationed in Haisyn, Vinnytsia region. In 2022, he became the Chief of the Main Directorate for Military Cooperation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. On June 20, 2023, he joined the Commission on Coordination of Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic Integration. In March 2022, Shapovalov received the rank of brigadier general.

On April 16, 2024, Brigadier General Hennadiy Shapovalov was appointed commander of the operational command “South.”.

Additionally, on January 19, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the new head of the National Academy of Land Forces named after Hetman Petro Sahaidachny in Lviv will be 40-year-old Colonel, Hero of Ukraine Roman Kachur. His candidacy was supported by the majority of military personnel in the “Army+” application.
