Law enforcement officials have announced suspicions against five individuals involved in the death of a young man due to the cable car's failure over the Dnipro River in Kyiv. This was reported on Wednesday, December 11, by the press service of the National Police and the Office of the Prosecutor General.
According to investigators, in October 2020, the Kyiv City Council's Department of Economics announced a competition for the "Installation of a cable car attraction over the Dnipro River from the People's Friendship Arch to Trukhaniv Island." Subsequently, a contract was signed with the competition winner. In 2024, after the attraction was put into operation, the company leased it to another entrepreneur. Law enforcement established that the designer of the attraction made several mistakes.
“In particular, a cable was used that, by its functional designation, cannot be used for attractions. This mistake ultimately led to the cable's breakage. At the same time, the director of the company approved this technical project,” the Office of the Prosecutor General stated.
It is noted that before transferring the attraction to the entrepreneur, an examination of the cable car was conducted; however, the private expert failed to notice that an incorrect cable had been installed.
Law enforcement has announced suspicions against four individuals for violating safety regulations during work with increased danger that resulted in a person's death (Part 2, Article 272 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). This includes the attraction's designer, the director of the company that won the competition for the cable car's installation, the expert from the private expert institution who inspected the attraction, and the entrepreneur who operated the cable car since 2024. A former technical supervision engineer from KP "Pleso" is suspected of negligence in office. The suspects face up to eight years of imprisonment.
Recall that on July 21, 2024, in Kyiv, the cable car collapsed, which traversed the Dnipro River. A 20-year-old young man was on it, and he fell into the river due to the cable's break. The following day, July 22, rescuers found the young man's body.
At that time, it was reported that the 500 m long cable car Kyiv Flyline belongs to LLC "Active Country," which operates a network of cable cars and theme parks in Kyiv. Kyiv Flyline confirmed that the accident occurred on the company's attraction.
