Over the course of three years of war, Poland has spent 2.1 billion zlotys, or approximately 504 million euros, on the treatment of Ukrainians. This information was released by the National Health Fund (NFZ) and reported by the Polish newspaper Fakt.
According to NFZ, nearly two million Ukrainians have utilized the Polish healthcare system during the three years of war. The healthcare expenses for Ukrainian refugees were distributed over the years as follows:
“All citizens of Ukraine who arrived in Poland from Ukraine since February 24, 2022, due to military actions on its territory (including those who entered Poland via another country) have received access to medical assistance in Poland (in accordance with the Law on Assistance to Citizens of Ukraine). The costs of these services are calculated with medical service providers and pharmacies by the National Health Fund and are financed from the Assistance Fund,” the Ministry of Health explained.
Ukrainians have accessed medical services in Poland free of charge, on the same basis as the citizens of this country.
The Ministry adds that medical assistance was also provided to those who were injured as a result of military actions in Ukraine and were transported to Poland for medical services.
Deputies from the pro-Russian party “Confederation” have submitted a bill to the Sejm proposing that Ukrainian citizens will be able to receive free medical assistance in Poland if they pay medical contributions in this country. “The proposed changes aim to end the practice that favors Ukrainian citizens over citizens of the Republic of Poland and other countries,” states the explanatory note to the new law project.
