On Tuesday, December 10, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly announced the imposition of sanctions against 9 Russians involved in human rights violations against Ukrainians.
The sanctions target 9 Russians who were implicated in the use of torture and other forms of cruel treatment against detained prisoners of war and civilian Ukrainians. This includes officials and employees from the Federal Penitentiary Service, the Federal Security Service, and the National Guard of Russia.
The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that their activities related to the torture of Ukrainians have been documented.
“We will continue to work with the international community to draw attention to and expose the ongoing human rights violations by Putin's regime, and to apply pressure on Russia to end its unprovoked aggressive war against Ukraine,” Joly added.
It is known that since 2014, Canada has imposed sanctions on over 3,000 individuals and entities for their involvement in violating Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
It is worth noting that on November 19, the United Kingdom implemented sanctions against a number of individuals and organizations responsible for the forced deportation and attempts to erase the national identity of Ukrainian children from temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. Two organizations, six high-ranking Russian officials, and two Ukrainian collaborators from Kherson were accused of indoctrination and deportation efforts.
