In the night from Monday to Tuesday, January 21, drones targeted facilities in the Smolensk region of Russia. The Smolensk Aviation Plant was among the sites attacked, as reported by Russian Telegram channels.

A series of explosions erupted over Smolensk around 00:50 (23:50 Kyiv time). Residents reported hearing between three and seven loud blasts. Videos capturing the moment of the attack on the city were shared on Telegram channels.

The sounds of the explosions were heard across several areas of Smolensk, leading to power outages in some buildings. Locals reported that at least two residential apartment buildings were damaged as a result of the attack. Debris from one of the downed drones fell onto a high-rise building on Borodinskaya Street, sparking a significant fire that was eventually extinguished.

Russian Telegram channels claim that Smolensk was heavily attacked by kamikaze drones PD-2 and "Lyuty." Propagandists suggest that the main targets of the drones were the oil refinery in Yartsevo and the local aviation plant in the Zadneprovsky district of Smolensk.

Later, the governor of the Smolensk region, Vasily Anokhin, reported on the operation of air defense in the region. Preliminary reports indicate that there were no casualties from the attack.

“Fires were recorded on the ground and on the roofs of some buildings due to the debris falling from the UAVs. Windows of residential buildings were also damaged. Emergency services are working at the sites,” the report stated.

Anokhin dismissed as fake the videos published on social media regarding drone strikes on facilities and residential buildings in the Smolensk region.

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that 55 drones were shot down overnight in six regions. The highest number of drones was reportedly downed over Bryansk.

“22 – over the territory of Bryansk region, 12 – over the territory of Rostov region, 10 – over the territory of Smolensk region, 6 UAVs – over the territory of Voronezh region, 4 – over the territory of Saratov region, and one – over the territory of Kursk region,” the report said.

The head of the Center for Counteracting Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council, Andriy Kovalenko, reported that drones attacked the sanctioned Smolensk Aviation Plant overnight. The facility produces and upgrades military aircraft, including Su-25 attack planes.

“The plant also provides major repairs and maintenance for aviation equipment, allowing Russia to maintain the combat readiness of outdated aircraft models. This plant is closely linked with other enterprises in the Russian defense industry, supplying components or participating in cooperation to create modern aviation systems,” Kovalenko wrote.

The head of the CPD emphasized that each strike on such a plant undermines Russia's ability to sustain its aviation in a combat-ready state.

It has been reported that the plant is subject to restrictions from the USA, Canada, Ukraine, Japan, Switzerland, and EU countries, as it produces Kh-59 missiles that Russian forces use in the war against Ukraine.

Updated at 11:50. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed the attack on the "Smolensk Aviation Plant" in the Smolensk region of Russia. The military reported explosions in the territory of the aviation plant.

Also, that night, drones from Special Operations Forces struck the "Liskinskaya" oil depot in the Voronezh region. According to the General Staff, this was the second strike on the facility within a week.

“As a result of the strike, tanks with fuel and lubricants, which the occupiers provide to the Russian troops, are on fire. The enterprise belongs to one of the largest Russian state corporations, "Rosneft,” the report stated.

In addition, Ukrainian defenders struck the command post of the 29th Combined Arms Army of the Russian Federation in the occupied Volnovakha in Donetsk region. There is information about explosions and smoke in the target area. The results of the strikes are being clarified.

Recall that on the eve, January 20, drones massively attacked Russian Kazan. The sanctioned Kazan Aviation Plant named after Gorbunov was likely among the drone targets.
